Roman Republic Coinage

Roman Republic coins are a whole classification of their own, and need to be treated as such here you will find some useful links for research.

Dane at wildwinds has just released a downloadable publication on ancient coins with Demos - the personification of the people, which you can purchase     HERE

For interesting reading, and over a thousand images try    Andrew McCabes website   you could spend weeks following the links on this one site alone.

For identification of Roman Republic coins, before your knowledge base grows you have two options.

1/. Are there any letters visible that you can use with the fantastic    Partial Legend Search    at wildwinds.com.

2/. If the coin appears to be anonymous, or has no writing on it, the best option would be to look for an object on the coin that you can use on the       Word Search     at wildwinds.com

an example of this would be in this image for example

A typical search phrase would be ‘Pegasus’, this would return a lot of results from the wildwind search engine that would require a lot of link clicking, but eventually you would arrive at

Lokroi Epizephyrioi, Bruttium, AR Stater. c 280 BC, Pegasus flying left, LK below / Helmeted head of Athena left, fly behind.

You can try this:

if you do the     SEARCH

click the top link

‘word search” the page by hitting Ctrl + F on your keyboard and typing ‘pegasus’ into the search field that appears at the top or bottom of you browser

clicking the search arrows next to the search field should take you too SG484 on the page

click SG484 and you should see this image.

It takes practice to search this way, but it get easier
